You Should Prepare Your Lawn For The Winter

Some people think that when it is autumn and the leaves start to fall that it is time to put away all the gardening tools. But it is now you should prepare your lawn for the night frost and to be strong for the winter so it quicker will be green when spring comes.

Have your lawn as clean as possible before the winter and the snow comes. It will only take a couple of hours to prepare your lawn for the winter. Rake your lawn and clean it from fallen leaves. Insects and worms loves rotten leaves and they can be harmful to your lawn. Reduce the cutting height on your mower. When you do the last cut the grass hight should be around 1 to 2 cm higher than you usually have it.

To make your lawn stronger you should give it a “fall fertilizer”. Your grass will manage the winter much better. Your lawn love this “fall fertilizer” and protect the grass in the winter and take full advantage of all the nutrients in its root system in spring. Your lawn will store these nutrients in its root system during the winter. And if you have moss, use a moss product like a water-soluble iron sulphate. Do that and you will also have some protection against fungal diseases.

If you have any weeds you should remove them manually and not to use any products that takes care weeds. Those products only works when the temperature is steady over 60 F (15-16 C). Leaving weeds to grow in the winter can kill the grass by springtime. You should also add lime to your lawn about every two or three year to replace important calcium and magnesium that have been washed away by heavy autumn and winter rain. Many types of lime can be used to correct this situation.
