Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t regard them to be genuine scientific pursuits. Following are some of the well known misconceptions about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very simple to imbibe and practice. The genuineness of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying hard to resist the spell.

Another false belief about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. That individual is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.

Some scientific discoveries have claimed that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have used the same hypnosis technique on all subjects without focusing on their individual natures. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different individuals come under different personality types, and thus are responsive to different techniques.

People also tend to associate hypnosis to meditation. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any communication involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. The person doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is not possible without communication.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in physique or in behavioural patterns of a person. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive habits like overeating and constant smoking, and by raising one’s motivation levels, hypnosis can bring about vital physical changes in an individual and ensure a healthier body.

If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
